FORTY YEARS IN SEARCH OF THE HISTORY BENEATH THE SEA
This is the way Mihail Lazarov describes his own life of a scholar. Now I use his words to address the authors of this volume and the readers. This is my way to express our shared respect and love towards this researcher and friend of ours.
His name is a true code name. A code name of the success that has been attained in the study of Bulgarian maritime history and underwater archaeology during the second half of the 20 and the beginning of the 21st century. A successor to the pioneers in this field of science, Mihail Lazarov`s profound knowledge of the worldwide experience is universally acknowledged and he has also shown himself to be an expert in organizing interdisciplinary projects and forums. His professional qualities and scientific contribution are unanimously recognized by scholars working all over the territory enclosed within the Iberian Peninsula and Asia Minor.
We are all aware of the fact that some day our works on paper will be known only to the specialized bibliographer. It is the achievement that lasts. Lazarov`s achievement in the field of science has been constantly augmented and renewed by his successors and students participating in many previous and coming programs for scientific search in the Black sea region. In some of these expeditions, most experienced foreign teams cooperate.
For some of us, the name of Mihail Lazarov is also a code name of something that has even greater and unchanging value. This most valuable thing is friendship. The international collegium, which has discovered and is continuously exploring the significant ancient Bulgarian history and culture on land and sea, consists not only of explorers but of cabinet scientists as well who prefer to approach science in their studies. In a collegium like this, Mihail Lazarov appears to be a person of most impartial good will and kind-hearted communication.
The man of these virtues and our friend I greet with these words.
I do hope to have the chance to continue to enjoy his spiritual goodness.
