From the very beginning of Christianity, pictorial symbols became part of the world of the early Christians. Some of these symbols existed before that time, but were infused with new meaning. This symbolism continued into the following centuries in the decoration of churches and became part of the iconographic tradition.

This unique Visual Guidebook contains a brief description of 330 symbols, illustrated with over 400 colour photographs of details of Christian mosaics (most from the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th centuries) and another 100 graphics and photographs of objects of church decoration. These photographs from the author's image database, collected over 15 years from 25 countries, together with the selection of illustrative examples for each symbol, form the backbone of the book. The explanation of symbols in this Visual Guidebook of Symbols in Christian Mosaics is based on the established Christian symbolism cited in the publications in the Bibliography, plus details from hundreds of papers and other publications.

The book is written for the general public, aiming to show the beauty of Christian mosaics along with their connection to Christian symbolism. The guide contains brief information about the life of early Christians, the historical time when these fine examples of Christian art were created, and the churches, monasteries, and museums where these mosaics and objects can be seen in situ.

Prof. Slávik D. Tabakov, PhD, Dr h.c., FIPEM, FHEA, FIOMP, FIUPESM is a specialist in medical physics, associated with the Medical University in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, King's College London, UK and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics at Trieste, Italy. He is Emeritus President of the International Union of Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM). In parallel with his academic work, for over 25 years Prof. Tabakov has devoted all his free time to the study of early Christian art and mosaics.
